The Waitlist This is not an easy entry to write so Ill just keep it short. In a nutshell, were not going to be able to admit anyone from the waitlist this year. Because last years class was significantly overenrolled, we admitted 200 fewer applicants this year fully intending to use the waitlist in order to meet our target class size. With that figure in mind, I was convinced that wed have to admit at least a few from the waitlist. I was wrong. To those of you who were on the waitlist, particularly those of you with whom Ive been corresponding these past couple of months I share your disappointment today. I wish I had brighter words to share, but the truth is simply that this journey has ended. My only consolation in all of this is that it would have been impossible to choose between you had we been able to take a few, because each of you has a ton of heart, creativity, and passion, expressed 500 different ways. And knowing that, I know that you will do wonderful things in the world, wherever you end up. Subsequently due to the manner in which the project was managed, the requirement for an upgraded version was quickly identified to satisfy the current application versions capability shortfalls. As a direct result of the implementation of this new version, a planned change was envisaged by the project manager and the customer in the way that future business was going to be conducted. Despite this change requirement, the training line of development had been overlooked and the user community has been left with an application upgrade which is significantly different than the previous version which, in turn, replaced the legacy application with no formal training or user manuals. The project board for this applica tion did not foresee the requirement for a training plan but as the project has moved forward, this requirement has been identified as a shortfall within the project. This has shown a lack of configuration control within the project but also how to manage the change of business process and keep the senior user and key stakeholders involved in the process (The Office of Government Commerce, 2009, p. 95). 1.5 Assignment Methodology Due to the restriction that the application is not yet live and will be after submission of this assignment due to technical issues with other Defence IS applications connectivity, the author decided to pilot the training to ensure that the training package was available once the application is live. Prior to the training being delivered, the author decided to conduct a pilot run. This was done using the authorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s previous experience of conducting surveys and using a similar process of conducting pilot surveys. Polit, Beck Hungler, (2001, p. 467) state that a pilot study can be used as a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“small scale version or trial run in preparation for a major studyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . The purpose of this pilot training was to validate the survey and to serve as a dry run ensuring that any logistical qualitative issues pertaining to the training are resolved prior to the main survey being deployed. De Vaus, (2002, p. 54) advises researchers to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“check to see if there are any ambiguities or if the respondents have any difficulty in respondingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . By piloting the training it is envisaged that the author has managed to avoid misleading, inappropriate or redundant training. The pilot training was conducted by two colleagues who work within Defence Inventory Management. They were invited to complete the training and provide any feedback on the survey paying particular attention to the following areas: Training Order. Wording/Terminology. Time taken to complete the training. Ease of use of the ETIS User Process Guide. Whilst the sample population should be a portion of the population to be surveyed, (Polit, Beck Hungler, 2001, p. 234), the author decided to use a sample population that did not work within the field of British Army Equipment Tables nor use a sample population that is representative of the population being trained. The author believes that the chosen personnel would provide a completely impartial and objective assessment of the survey. As they work within Defence Inventory management the sample is similar to the population being trained, this has assisted in ensuring that any training bias is kept to a minimum (Polit, Beck Hungler, 2001, p. 234). The pilot sample size represents 6.06% of the total population the final training package will train. On closure of the pilot training package, 100% of those invited to participate responded to the user feedback. Respondents found the training easy to follow but as the training was conducted without access to the application able the y were unable to say if the training combined with the application would run smoothly but could see how the interaction of PowerPoint ® and the application would work, in principle. An area of feedback was the inclusion of a progress counter. As a result of this feedback the author changed the layout and added a progress bar to each page. The author also added a more comprehensive brief about the user process guide at the beginning, explaining how the guide can be used and how it can be used a desk top guide outside of this training. The training package can be found at Appendix A of this report. The feedback from the piloted training package commented on the following areas: PowerPoint ® theme. It was noted that the main theme for the presentation should be changed from our corporate theme to another theme as we as a Top Level Budget (TLB) do not own this training package, just have complied it. The training package will be owned by the Defence College of Logistics, All Arms Wing (DCLAAW). Instructor Notes. The screen shot contained within the instructor notes were particularly small, making their value negligible and was suggested that they should be larger. The author was complemented on the fact that as a package 100% of those who piloted the training said à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ that with a modicum of preparatory revision, they could present the courseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . The author, after some reflection, looked at the comments made from the piloted survey and has made the following amendments to the training package prior to delivery once the system has gone à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“liveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . PowerPoint ® theme. The author having taken this information on board contacted the DCLAAW and had a discussion with them about ownership of the training package. At the end of the discussion it was agreed that they would sponsor the package, as it was related to a Logistic IS application. But the content of the training was owned by the Senior User within the community and they would be responsible for future updates and package delivery, which the Senior User has agreed too. This resulted in the user adopting the PowerPoint ® theme for DCLAAW. Instructor Notes. Having had a discussion about the PowerPoint ® theme, the author then addressed the issue of the pictures in the lesson plans for each slide and the fact that the pictures were on the small side. The pictures in the lesson plan are to give the instructor, especially inexperienced, a quick reference guide to what slide is coming next, a visual guide in the presentation. Whilst the author disagrees with this and believes that they add little value to the trainer. The author is somewhat restricted in removing these from the training plans as this layout is standard practice within the DCLAAW and as they are the sponsor of the training package. The author felt obligated that they should keep within the spirit of the training establishment and retain the pictures. The author verbally thanked the pilot participants for their assistance and for their kind words of encouragement. The author recognises that once the training is formally delivered to the user community more amendments from the post course evaluation will have to be incorporated to the training package. 1.6 Literature Review This literature review only covers learning theories, whilst the author has had to research and develop knowledge in other disciplines, the author feels that the focus on one discipline for this review is sufficient as this may make the literature review become too wide and varied and lose relevance to this assignment. The author has noted that the field of learning styles is not unified as one but comes across in 3 different fields of study: theoretical, teaching and commercial. This brought complications for the author and was somewhat unexpected. These problems can be seen as: This is a multi disciplined area and has authors from fields including but not exclusive to psychology, sociology, business studies, management and education. This comes with its own issues as the authors will interpret the various evidence in their own discipline terms and possibly be steered by their own subjects theories and possibly tailored to suite their own subjects perspective. Commercialism is promoting certain, models, styles or inventories. This has led to certain models becoming more popular than others. In the UK for example Kolbà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Learning Style Inventory (LSI) and Honey and Mumfordà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Learning Styles Questionnaire (LSQ) are widely known and used. The gains for the creators of these models is huge but also any critical activity into the theory and empirical elements of their model claims are seen as unfavourable (Coffield, Moseley, Hall Ecclestone, 2004a, p. 2). Research is completed for differing purposes. Some aim to contribute to theory and do not intend for their model to be used in mainstream use, whilst others develop to be used by individuals in all disciplines. The author was presented with a very large amount of information available for the literature review, this made it difficult to review especially as the author is not a specialist in any of the aforementioned disciplines. This meant that the author was hit by a wave of unknowing what was relevant, current etc . This was further emphasised by the Learning and Skills Research Centreà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s 2004 study (Coffield et al, 2004a, p. 1) which identified 71 models of learning styles and was initially used by the author to try and get a firm appreciation of the task at hand. Due to this the author became more aware of overlap between learning styles and other learning aspects. This was further put into context, (Reid, 2005, p.56) who explained that learning styles were connected to seven other aspects of learning and depending and as each area had different interpretations which may cause confusion. The author certainly believes that this is true and learning is a subject that does not fit neatly into its own box but in fact is a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Russian Dollà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . This was typified by Curryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s 1987 evaluation of learning styles by the use of the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“onion model of learning stylesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ , (Coffield et al, 2004a, p. 8). Whilst Curryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s model is referencing learning styles you can clearly see his model used to explain the interconnections of learning styles (at the centre of the onion) and the seven other aspects (the next seven layers of the onion) so as you peel away each layer or another aspect you get closer to understanding the subject at the core of the subject, in this case learning styles. Knowledge results from the combination of grasping and transforming experienceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  (Kolb, 1986, p. 38). His model places experience as the core element of the l earning process. The author agrees with this but also believes that the theory fails to explain the importance of knowledge to complete the learning cycle. Just because an individual experiences activity does not necessarily mean that the individual has understood what has been done or more importantly why or how it works in relation to other activities especially if it is part of a system. This is due to having to choose which continuum is applicable for that learning experience, grasping or transforming, (Dochy, Gijbels, Segers, Van Den Bossche, 2011, p. 57), as the learner is forced to choose as they cannot do both simultaneously.

In other words, GPA compares you within that school, SAT compares you across the nation. 2. The SAT Doesn't Measure Many Classroom Factors. The SAT can't tell that you're a great team player, follow the teacher's instructions, or that you're a nice kid, all of which do go into your GPA in general. Getting good grades in school is a skill that you've spent years honing and perfecting. Most of these skills don't translate to the SAT. To prepare for the SAT you'll need to, in some ways, start from square one. Preparation is key to getting ahead again. 3. The SAT Strongly Measures Analytic Test Taking Skills. Comprehensive Review of the Star Math Online Assessment STAR Math is an online assessment program developed by Renaissance Learning for students in grades one through 12. The program assesses 49 sets of math skills in 11 domains for grades one through eight and  44 sets of math skills in 21 domains for grades nine through 12 to determine a student’s overall math achievement. Areas Covered The first- through eighth-grade domains include counting and cardinality, ratios and proportional relationships, operations and algebraic thinking, the number system, geometry, measurement and data, expressions and equations, numbers and operations in base 10, fractions, statistics and probability, and functions. The 21 ninth- through 12th-grade domains are similar but much more intensive and rigorous. There are 558 total grade-specific skills that STAR Math tests. The program is designed to provide teachers with individual student data quickly and accurately. It typically takes a student 15 to 20 minutes to complete an assessment, and reports are available immediately. The test begins with three practice questions designed to ensure that the student knows how to use the system. The test itself consists of 34 math questions varying by grade level across those four domains.   Features If you have Accelerated Reader, Accelerated Math, or any of the other STAR assessments, you only have to complete the setup one time. Adding students and building classes is quick and easy. You can add a class of 20 students and have them ready to be assessed in about 15 minutes. STAR Math provides teachers with the appropriate library that each student should be enrolled in for the Accelerated Math program. The grade equivalent represents how a student performs compared to other students nationally. Barriers to Health Maintenance and Disease Prevention Redante Castro Introduction: There are many factors that interfere with health equity and the ability of the patients to get their healthcare needs met. Whether people are healthy or not, is determined by their circumstances and environment. There are challenges that a patient and healthcare providers encounters in securing and providing health services. These social determinants of health, such as income, education, transportation, housing, and race or ethnicity, have powerful influence on a patient’s life long before they arrive at a hospital or clinic. According to literature, persistent social exclusion and inequities in wealth distribution and in access and use of services are reflected in health outcomes. Social exclusions and inequity are obstacles to human development. It poses barriers to poverty reduction strategies. It hinders social unity and improved health conditions of the populations. Social exclusion and inequity are further compounded by racial and gender discrimination. There are health disadvantages due to differences between segments of populations or between societies. There are health gaps arising from the differences between the worse-off and everyone else. Lastly, there are health gradients relating to differences across spectrum of the population. Studies have shown that the poorest of the poor have the worst health. This is also a global phenomenon, seen in low, middle, and high income countries. Within countries, studies showed that a person with low socioeconomic position has worse health- this is the soci al gradient of health. The poorest have the highest mortality rates. Improvements in income and education has a positive effect on health. One’s occupation is also relevant to health in terms of workplace risks exposure and its role in positioning the person along a society’s hierarchy. There is also demographic transition to consider that affects health, i.e., increasing life expectancy, increasing number of youths, growing number of elderly persons in the population, increased migration, and rapid urban growth. Population distribution and population age structure are crucial determinants of social, economic, and health-related services. For example, people in poverty are likely to be exposed to higher level of stress, economic uncertainty, and unhealthy conditions than their wealthier countrymen. It was recognized by some policymakers and stakeholders that the population’s health cannot be sustained by focusing solely on the financing and distribution of medical services. A more comprehensive and integrated strategies are necessary to foster health in all policies. An approach that integrate considerations of health, well-being, and equity in the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies and services. Determinants of health are being acknowledged and incorporated into health reform processes and policy changes are made. Examples of these policy changes are: regulation of alcohol and tobacco products, the expansion of healthier transportation systems (bicycle paths, pedestrian-friendly roads, and pathways), improvement in air and water quality, expansion of primary health care services, and improvements in nutrition programs. This new focus has helped divert the emphasis away from individual lifestyles and from a focus on disease towards broader determinan ts and actions that created a big impact on population health. However, it is probably fair to say that all community issues are political to some degree. For example, if a factory is poisoning town water system with its effluent and poisonous waste, local officials are faced with the choice of not dealing with the actual cause of the problem, i.e., the dumping of waste and endangering citizen’s health, or addressing the dumping and endangering citizen’s job. Differences of political opinion can have enormous consequences in the health of the community. Health is not merely the absence of illness or infirmity. It is the embodiment of physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing (World Health organization, 2007). Spiritual wellbeing involves one’s religious belief. Religious belief is essentially personal and private matter over which the individual should exercise control and choice. It is of value to understand the relative importance of religious beliefs and practices in protecting and promoting the health of the people of religious faith and the need to protect their rights to practice this belief free from discrimination. There is an abundant evidence in literature that religiousness can generate multitude benefits in health outcomes. For people of faith, their religion and belief system may influence individual health-promoting practices, for example encouraging abstinence from alcohol or not eating pork. They may also influence social environments. Strong social support and participation have been found t o be associated with better health/ longer life and may be offered by some religious communities. To people of faith, prayer is very important while seeking healthcare or undergoing procedures, a prayer of support and encouragement when unfavorable result was received. There are some religious group that blood and blood products are not to be part of any treatment. For some religious groups, contraceptives, abortion and anti-life practices are against their belief system. With these in mind, alternative ways are to be sought to promote the health and wellbeing of the individual without compromising their belief system. Values are criteria that people use to evaluate actions, people and events. What is important to a person may not be important to someone else. Each individual holds numerous values with varying degrees of importance. Values are motivational construct. They refer to the desirable goals people strive to attain. People have different health care value system. There are three ways people will view their health: how they became ill, what made them ill, and how they believed they can be cured. Example, people from the East (China) would value acupuncture for pain management option. This in turn will cause health care providers to look at health treatment plan to accommodate those needs. Among Asian cultures, maintain family harmony is an important value. The interests and honor of the family are more important than those of individual family members. Older family members are respected, and their authority is often unquestioned. Therefore, due to respect for authority, disagreement with tr eatment recommendation by the health team is avoided. (McLaughlin, L. Braun, K. 1998). Ethnic discrimination and exclusion affects all aspects of the individual’s life, including those related to health. Studies show that indigenous working people has low income, low educational level, poor access to healthcare, and has high mortality rate. Health screening, diagnosis, and treatment inequities within and between communities of different race, ethnicity and socioeconomic background are evident. Poverty barriers are linked to lack of primary care physicians, geographical barriers to care, competing survival priorities, comorbidities, inadequate health insurance, lack of information and knowledge, risk –promoting lifestyles, provider-and system-level factors, perceived susceptibility to disease, cultural beliefs and attitudes. Social exclusion can be the result of prejudice, which results in different access to health care, education, or other services. These are social norms of acceptance of particular behaviors or practices. Culture influences how people define illness or wellness, how they understand the causes of illness or wellness, and whom they access to improve their health. Greater support from families, friends and communities is linked to better health. Culture-customs and traditions, and the beliefs of the family, practices and behaviors, and community all affect health and even the outcomes of intervention. Example: smoking, or even alcohol abuse, may be accepted part of the culture of a community. In that case, many more people will adopt it than in a community where those practices are considered health risks. Some people think that health is not having any disease or illness, something that one feels. A paper from a conference of international health experts in 2011 sees health as the ability to adapt and to self-manage (Jocelyn Lowinger 2014).Medical News Today (2014) claims that most people accept that there are two aspects of health, physical and mental health. Most people relates physical health to good body health because of regular physical activity (exercise), good nutrition, and adequate rest. To some people, physical health involves structural health and chemical health. Structural health is associated with one’s height/weight ratio, body mass index, resting heart rate, and recovery time after exercise. Chemical health suggests that there are no toxic chemicals in one’s body and that there is a balance of nutrients needed by the body. Mental health on the other hand refers to people’s cognitive and emotional well-being. People have always found it easier to e xplain what mental illness is, rather than mental illness. Most people agree that mental health is the absence of mental illness. Mental health, to some people includes the ability to enjoy life, the ability to bounce back from adversities, the ability to achieve balance, to be flexible and adapt, the ability to feel safe and secure and making the best of what you have. Some views health as reflecting lifestyle, including a moral dimension and emotional well-being (MacInnes Milburn: 1994). Healthy behavior as not smoking, good diet, exercising, and not drinking alcohol to excess, a positive approach to life. Elderly people concepts of health were identified as the absence of disease, as a dimension of strength, weakness and exhaustion and health as a functional fitness. (Williams, R. Illness results from negative attitudes, arising from a conflict between the individual and society-lifestyles in its widest sense. Ideas about causes of disease tend to emphasize biological rather than behavioral factors. Some of the agents of disease cited by working class women included infection, hereditary factors and environmental factors. The causes of disease are very much outside the control of the individual. Studies have also shown that people’s ideas about disease causation and vulnerability from illness are also influenced by biomedicine, example, and germ theory. However, people tend to take on beliefs which tend to fit with their lay understandings. (Calnan, M. (1987) Health and Illness: the Lay perspective. London: Tavistock). On the other hand, non-Western people views illness into two main systems according to anthropologists- personalistic and natur alistic. Personalistic system views illness to be caused by the active and purposeful intervention of an agent that may be: a supernatural being such as a deity or a god, a non-human being such as a ghost, ancestor, or evil spirit, or a human being such as a witch or a sorcerer. In this system, the sick person is a victim, the object of punishment directed specifically against him, for reasons that concerns him alone. In naturalistic system, illness is explained in impersonal, systemic terms. There is a concept of balance and equilibrium. Health prevails when elements in the body – heat, cold, the humors, etc. are in balance appropriate to the age and condition of the individual in his natural and social environment. (Foster, G. Anderson, B. (1978) Medical Anthropology New York: Jon Wiley). There are also beliefs or superstition that people believes as causative factor of illnesses. An understanding of people’s ideas about health maintenance and disease prevention is crucial to the success of health education and health promotion programs. One’s health beliefs may contribute to the knowledge of informal health care-how people manage their own health and whether they choose biomedical health services. Public attitudes towards health professionals and their authority as medical experts are changing. The days of blind trust in a doctor â€Å"who knows best† is history. Social and cultural processes that have encouraged change in interpersonal trust relations have stimulated changes in institutional trust. Beliefs about the limits of medical expertise together with concerns about the effectiveness of professional regulatory systems to ensure high standards of clinical care, magnified by the media coverage of medical errors and examples of medical incompetence, have eroded trust in health care organizations, in the medical professions in general, and in the health system as a whole. The lower level of institutional trust and the emergence of more informed and potentially demanding patients who are aware that expert knowledge may be contested and who may actively seek further opinions poses challenges for both governments and the medical professions and raises the question of wh ether trust is still relevant and necessary to the provision of medical care in the 21st century. (Trust relations in health care – new agenda/The European Journal of Public Health 2006) There should be policies to improve health in early life, such as equal opportunity of access to education, good nutrition, health education; access to health and preventive care facilities and access to adequate social and economic resources. Legislations to help protect minority and vulnerable groups from discrimination and social exclusion should be implemented. Government should intervene to reduce poverty and social exclusion at both individual and neighborhood levels. There should be policy regarding improvement in conditions of work and employees involvement in decision making process. For individuals who turn to drugs, alcohol and tobacco use – there should be a policy that aims to address the patterns of social deprivation in which the problems are rooted. Effective drug policy must be supported by the broad framework of social and economic policy. Conclusion: Countries, such as New Zealand can develop health policy changes in assembling and promoting effective, evidence based practices, place health equity as a shared goal across governments and other sectors of society, build a sustainable global movement and to turn public health knowledge into political action. Governments should recognize that welfare programs need to address both psychosocial and material needs.
