Day Care Center vs Nanny

There are many parents who are looking for someone who takes care of their children while they are away. Their option will be a day care center or nanny. If you are one of those parents, I want to persuade you not to choose quickly because they are not the same. They provide your child with different environment, you should select after understanding their similarities and differences. The first similarity between a day care center and nanny is that they take care of your child for specific period. Some parents can’t have jobs or study and pursue careers. It is because they have to take most of their time off for taking care of their children and don’t have time to do it. The job of day care provider and nanny is to help those parents by taking care of their children. The second similarity is that a staff in day care center and nanny are trained people. They are educated in early child development or a related field. It means that they can assist your child in developing his academic skills. They can help children with preparation for kindergarten and children who are in school with homework. Also, because they studied early child development or related field, they know children’s emotional needs and how to discipline properly. The third similarity is that they have issues with illness. Day care center can’t let you leave your child with them when he is sick. It is because, in the day care center, children are in close contact with other children ant it will let germs spread easily. On the other hand, it is needless to say, but a nanny can’t take care of your child when she is sick either. The first difference is the number of children they take care of. Day care provider can’t take care of multiple children because there are many children in day care center. It means that they will not give one-on-one attention to your child. However, your child’s being among many children will good to your child. Your child will learn how to socialize because he will interact with other children. On the other hand, nanny is responsible for only your child, so your child will be able to open his heart to her quickly. The second difference is the location where they look after your children. Needless to say, if you choose day care center, your child will be taken care of in the day care center. Your child may feel uncomfortable because he can’t move freely in the day care center like he does in his house. On the other hand, nanny comes to your home to take care of your child. Your child may feel comfortable to be in his house, but he will not be able to make friends like he can in a day care center. The third difference is the cost. You will have to pay for day care center between 62 dollars to 320 dollars a week. On the other hand, the cost of nanny is from 350 dollars to 700 dollars a week. The cost of day care center is much cheaper than the cost of nanny, so to put your child into a day care center will help you a lot with money. However, a nanny does things worth the cost. For example, if your child is allergic to a certain food, she will not cook meal that contains that food if you ask her. This will not be done in day care center. As you know now, a day care center and nanny are similar, but not the same. They provide different environment for your child and affect you differently. Because of it, you have to consider carefully with whom you should leave your child while you are away.

How Facebook Effects Relationships

Facebook is a popular web page where anybody can create a free account, similar to an email address. The site allows anybody to add friends, post pictures, and let all their friends know what their doing on an hourly basis. At the beginning, the page appeared to be a great way to keep in touch with people who lived two minutes to two hours to two thousand miles away. The site allows all who have accounts to add friends, some who are suggested by the page itself, and keep in touch through quick, easy Internet access.But is the web site actually helping or hurting the relationships we form everyday? There are many benefits to Facebook. Facebook is the quick, easy way to keep up to date with events that happen every day. Once a person creates an account, they can add their friends and therefore look at the page that is created by that person and see their posts. When a person â€Å"posts† something it means that they are writing anything they want for all their friends to see, fr om song lyrics, to what their plans are for the day, to angry outbursts with a lot of curse words associated.The posts pop on the community wall so a person doesn’t have to go to each individual’s page to see their plans. This feature is beneficial because it allows a friend to discover plans and therefore work with, or around them to be able to see or communicate with that person without having to go through to hassle of keeping in touch every hour or having to send a text to twenty of your friends about what you’re doing that day. Another benefit of Facebook is it allows a person to keep in touch even through long distances.For example, if a person lives across the country, it is difficult to coordinate the time difference, and therefore makes it hard to have phone conversation or text repeatedly back and forth unless it is at a set time that is consensual for both parties. Facebook allows people to keep in touch on each person’s own time through wall p osts, and messages, this is especially helpful in families who have ventured off to different areas of the world. Finally, the site is helpful by keeping loved ones in touch.Just as it does with families, Facebook allows person A to say something to person B on their own time but it also lends a hand in reminding loved ones how much they miss or care about each other publicly. Both sites allow one member of the couple to get brownie points, through gifts and comments, and get them out of the dog house. (Sabatini) The option for a boyfriend of bringing surprise flowers to his girlfriend when she’s with all her friends is eliminated when the two are separated by hours due to college or job choice or a family vacation. Facebook allows the man to publicly display his affection (though it wonâ€℠¢t always work) to his girlfriend through words of endearment and the thought that he doesn’t mind letting everyone know how much he cares for his significant other. Although there are many benefits of Facebook, the site can also create a lot of tension.In the film Catfish, a documentary directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, a 24-year-old photographer begins talking to a family after becoming intrigued with an 8-year-old child painter prodigy. As the main character Yaniv â€Å"Nev† Schulman creates a stronger bond with the family he starts to talk to the young prodigy’s older sister via text, phone calls, and of course, Facebook. Without ever meeting his soon-to-be girlfriend, Nev discovers her appearance, her friends, events, and whereabouts through Facebook.However, when Nev travels to visit the family and girl he has been communicating with for months he learns that all is not what he expected. The location where she has said to be staying is not being occupied by anyone, and the mail he has sent her is still located in the abandoned mailbox. Nev and his friend’s next stop is the house of the young artist who inspired the whole film. While there Nev realizes that the girl he had been having a technology-based relationship with is actually the married mother of the 8-year-old sensation. The mother had created a fake Facebook account, added fake friends she had created and posted fake wall posts.Through imagination, and some form of determination this woman formed a relationship with Nev through Facebook updates and text messages. Eric Eisenberg pronounces in a Catfish review, â€Å"As social networking becomes more and more a part of every day life for people of all ages, Catfish is a reminder that it’s wise to wonder what’s truly going on at the other end of the line. † (Eisenberg) The movie simply proves that Facebook can let a person be anyone they want, the pictures, the updates, everything can be a lie, yet nobody will ever know.It’s a concern of trust, but more so of safety. Even though there are many more negative aspects of Facebook, such as the time it consumes from people every day, the things that makes Facebook non-appealing to many is that it creates jealousy, and tension in intimate relationships. On the web site people are able to tag other people in pictures. The website causes jealousy due to pictures because if a person’s significant other is pictured with someone you don’t know, or aren’t comfortable with, or never told you they would be with, the tension rises and questions come up.Another negative effect of Facebook on relationships is how wall posts may not match exactly what a person said. But now you have the ability, should you want to, to scour their Facebook page for updates over the weekend, to see what they’re up to. † (Fisher) Facebook creates a sense of suspicion, and obsession to check if your partner is actually doing what he or she claims.Furthermore, Facebook has the ability for people to display their relationship status. A relationship isn’t really a relationship these days unless it is â€Å"Facebook official†, and a break-up isn’t concrete until a wall post says that they are single. John Norvell declares â€Å"†¦people had ways of telegraphing their status. † (Hines) Even though people could always easily portray their relationship status through actions and words the simplicity of updating a page in seconds can cause a person to second guess â€Å"trying to talk it over† or give them time to reflect on what’s actually happened, and if breaking up is the best choice.As stated before, Facebook can let people demonstrate their care for another, h owever it can also become an annoying obsession preformed by many, women more so then men. For instance, â€Å"One participant of the survey said that her boyfriend calls her a pain when she does it (comments on his wall or message’s him) because she has done it so many times that it has become obnoxious. † (Sabatini) Finally, and most obviously, Facebook use correlates directly to stress in relationships. Facebook permits a person’s significant other to view how much activity is taking place, and therefore generates resentment, yet it is a no win situation.If a person has too much information it can be questioned on why so much action is taking place, yet if things are hidden or unable to be seen it is also grounds for distress because curiosity strikes. (Parr) There is no easy way out of the Facebook jealousy factor, except to delete your Facebook account altogether, and consequently disconnect from society in a way. In conclusion, Facebook is a very good way to stay in touch with people who are distances away. It helps people keep up to date, and know what their friends are doing for the day. The site allocates couples to show their affection to the public without even leaving their house, and doesn’t conflict with time schedules or location. But to every good, there is a little bad. Facebook creates jealousy left and right.The web page makes questions arise that may not have before the site was created. And the option of hiding crucial information or checking and obsessing over it can lead to destruction in a somewhat other happy relationship. Forty percent of the residents draw public aid. The blacks who are able are fleeing away from the city as well. This makes the population continue to drop. In 1972, James Williams was the town black first Mayor he defeated Charles Merritts even though Merritts had the support of the white Democrats. Thereafter Merritts was sentence to federal prison for taking kickbacks as president of School District 189 Board of Education and also for putting a contract out to kill Clyde C. Jordan, a great leader for the town who was a fellow school board member and publisher of the Crusader black weekly newspaper. In the present year we can see that nothing has changed. All the corruption of this town has been going on since the beginning of time. Nothing really has change, we might see a new promising building here and now but the wrong people still holds the key to the scene of this all. We as citizens of East St. Louis, IL hopefully one day get the courage to stand up for what’s right and not worry about the consequence we might endure. Change is good and the city of East Saint Louis needs a tremendous change and we as the people can and shall make that happen.

Hence, key concepts of sustainable development and sustainable tourism, values and ethics of sustainable tourism and the needs of sustainability shall be discussed in this essay. Sustainable Development is an industry that aims to meet the needs of the people while protecting the environment, meeting the needs not only for the present, but also the ability to meet future generations needs. Evita Peron In 1949 the most familiar scene in Argentina was the one played out almost daily at the Ministry of Labor in Buenos Aires. There, under the glare of camera lights, a former radio star and movie actress, now the most powerful woman in South America, would enter her office past a crush of adoring, impoverished women and children. Evita Peron, the wife of President Juan Peron, would sit at her desk and begin one of the great rituals of Peronism, the political movement she and her husband created. It was a pageant that sustained them in power. She would patiently listen to the stories of the poor, then reach into her desk to pull out some money. Or she would turn to a minister and ask that a house be built. She would caress filthy children. She would kiss lepers, just as the saints had done. To many Argentines, Evita Peron was a flesh-and- blood saint; later, 40,000 of them would write to the pope attesting to her miracles. She was born on May 7, 1919, in Los Toldos, and baptized Maria Eva, but everyone called her Evita. Her father abandoned the family shortly after her birth. Fifteen years of poverty followed and, in early 1935, the young Evita fled her stifling existence to go to Buenos Aires. Perhaps, as some have said, she fell in love with a tango singer who was passing through. She wanted to be an actress, and in the next few years supported herself with bit parts, photo sessions for titillating magazines and stints as an attractive judge of tango competitions. She began frequenting the offices of a movie magazine, talking herself up for mention in its pages. When, in 1939, she was hired as an actress in a radio company, she discovered a talent for playing heroines in the fantasy world of radio soap opera. This was a period of political uncertainty in Argentina, yet few people were prepared for the military coup that took place in June 1943. Among the many measures instituted by the new government was the censorship of radio soap operas. Quickly adapting to the new environment, Evita approached the officer in charge of allocating airtime, Colonel Anibal Imbert. She seduced him, and Imbert approved a new project Evita had in mind, a radio series called Heroines of History. Years later, people would say that Evita had been... ...cancer had spread. In June 1952, Peron's congress named Evita the Spiritual Leader of the Nation. Her own final contribution to that deification came in her will, in which she wrote that she wanted "the poor, the old, the children, and the workers to continue writing to me as they did in my lifetime." She died on July 26, 1952, at the age of 33. A specialist was brought in to embalm the body and make it "definitively incorruptible." Evita's body lay in state for 13 days-and even then the crowds showed no sign of diminishing. In the decades that followed, Peronism continued to occupy a place in Argentine political life, taking the form mainly of anti-government terrorism. In 1971, after a number of demands by terrorists, the Argentine government agreed to return Evita's body. It was shipped to Peron in Spain. That year, Peron was allowed to return to Argentina; two years later he was president again. He died in office, and it was his wife and successor, Isabel, who brought Evita's body back to Argentina, in the hope that the aura of a saint would again dazzle the public.

Adoration of the Magi by di Nardo :: Iconographical Analysis Art Artwork

Iconographical Analysis: di Nardo, â€Å"Adoration of the Magi† The painting â€Å"Adoration of the Magi† by di Nardo portrays the three Magi approaching the baby Jesus and the Virgin Mary. However, there is much more to it than just this familiar scene from Judeo-Christian lore. When approaching this painting in order to analyze it iconographically, it is necessary to first look at all aspects of the form. If this aspect is ignored, it provides for an incomplete analysis of the painting. Once this is looked at, the iconography of the painting becomes much clearer, and it is easier to compare the painting to the actual biblical text from which it was derived (Gospel of St. Matthew 2:1 – 2:12). When approaching the painting the first thing I noticed was the odd perspective. There are several vanishing points. Also, all of the figures seem to be placed on one plane. Because of this, the two figures that represent Jesus and Mary seem to be hovering weirdly above the ground. This, I believe, draws the viewer’s attention to these two figures, since they are the main focus of the painting. Due to the influence of my culture, I recognized the figures as Jesus and Mary immediately. However, despite this, there are a few indicators as to who the people represented in the painting are. When viewing the painting, it is obvious that the figures of mother and child are the main point because the gazes of all of the people in the represented center on the child, including the mother’s. Also, the weird hovering effect also directs the viewer’s attention to these two figures. Both Mary and Jesus have halos, but this is not necessarily a distinguishing factor seeing as how there are also four other figures in the painting that have halos. However, the halo that surrounds the head of the baby Jesus has a slightly different pattern than those that the other figures possess. This lets you know that for whatever reason, this child is set apart from all other figures in the painting. So, even if the viewer is of another culture or religion and doesn’t see the significance of the female in the picture being clothed in blue and red, or the significance of the â€Å"blessing† position in which the baby is holding his hand, he can see that for some reason, this child is being distinguished from all other people in the painting.

Response to The Scarlet Letter "Confess thy truth and thou shall have eternal rest." I belive that is the moral to be taught in this novel of inspirational love, yet a novel of much sorrow. The impossible became possible in The Scarlet Letter, a story set back in the Puritan Times. In this response, I will give my reactions in writing to different aspects of the novel;the characchters, my likes and dislikes, my questions, and my opinion of the harsh Puritain lifestyle. Hester Prynne, the Reverend Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth each suffered guilt in their own way in the novel The Scarlet Letter. In the beginning of the novel, Hester Prynne should have not suffered the way she did on the scaffold alone. She was forced to be intergated by the high-officials of the town, while holding her little Pearl in arms. Making matters worse, the father of the child was in that very group of officals. She was then sentenced to wear the scarlet letter "A", showing her guilt "externally". Unable to take it off, she was forced to show her guilt to the entire settlement. However, the Reverend Dimmesdale suffered "internally", with a scarlet letter of his own engraved in his mind, and on his chest as well. He felt like he betrayed God, and beat himself in a frenzy to prove his wrongdoing. He often questioned wheather his authority was true or not. Roger Chillingworth suffered the least, because he only failed to reveal the secret that he knew, the father of the child who Hester Prynne was forced to live with. This small restriction to his life forced him to suffer "internally". I had different likes and dislikes in the novel The Scarlet Letter. There were many things that needed to be judged to fit into the given catagories, including; character attitudes, and character decisions. For example, the attitude displayed from the Reverend Mr. Dimmesdale was rather unnapealing to me. There are different ways of settling ones guilt rather than whipping oneself in a closet. The one character whose attitude was appealing to me was that of Pearl's. She showed that mistakes in a relationship often lead to bad situations. Her mischeif and connection to the devil are examples of just those situations. Character decisions played an euqally important role. For example, I thought the descision for Hester not to tell who was the father of Pearl on the scaffold to be very brave, but was wrong.

Since recall for any given item depends upon the position of that item in the series, it was investigated if the type of recall has influence on the primacy and recency effects.The hypothesis predicted that participants in the free recall condition will show a  classic position curve with the recency effect taking place almost equally to the primacy effect, then when compared to participants in the serial anticipation condition where the primacy effect will be dominant. This was based on previous research by Deese (1957), which demonstrated that it is po ssible to alter the form of the serial position curve by instructions as to the method of recall. The DV was number of words recalled and the IV was the fact whether free recall or serial-order recall was instructed.The repeated measures design was chosen. An opportunity sample of 36 participants (N=36) participated. 3 lists of 20 common English words were read out to participants in the control group, all of the lists were instructed for free recall before and after reading of the list. 3 lists of 20 common English words were read out to participants in the experimental group. In the first list free recall was called on for both before the reading of the list and after. In the second list, free recall was called on before the reading, and serial recall was instructed after the hearing of the list.In the third list, serial recall was called on for both before the reading of the list and after The T-test showed the results of the list were significant at a 5% level of significance, s o the research hypothesis that type of instruction affects recall was accepted. Word count: 304 Introduction Cognitive psychology deals with mental processes such as memory. Memory has been studied by psychologists since Atkinson and Shiffrin proposed theory of the multistore model of memory (MSM), which breaks-up memory into different categories.Information is received by sensory stores, and some is passed to short-term memory stores (STS), which can then be passed to long-term memory stores (LTS). Attention is the control process responsible for transfer of information from sensory store to STS. This is supported by many studies that involve serial position effect, showing that when participants are presented with lists of words, they remember first few and last few words and are more likely to forget those in middle.A study, conducted by Murdock (1962) investigates the relationship between serial position effect, position of words on given list, and participant‘s ability to freely recall them. Murdock suggested that early words were put into  long-term memory (primacy effect) because subject had time to rehearse words, and words from the end went into  short term memory  (recency effect). Words in middle had been there too long to be held in STS, due to displacement, and not long enough to be put into LTS, hence they’re forgotten. Glanzer and Cunits (1966) conducted an  experiment introducing the variable of immediate versus delayed recall.They studied separate output of STS, since they introduced a  variable, delayed start of recall, which had a  different effect on long-term and short-term storage, and therefore changed the beginning and end of the serial position curve. Studies of the position curve and memory show that a  delay of thirty seconds (being the time hypothesized that short-term memory lasts for) did not affect the primacy effect which was clearly present, but drastically lowered the amount of words of the recency e ffect. Deese (1957) focuses on serial organization of words.The study showed probability of recall depended upon position of item in the series. It focused on a  new variable, free recall versus serial anticipation, where subject not only had to remember words, but also in correct order. Serial anticipation changes the serial position effect, since when serial anticipation is compared to free recall, it can be noted that the curves are roughly mirror images of one another. The researchers divided their subjects into two groups, those who would freely recall words, and those who would be instructed to recall words in the order they were presented.Findings show that although the total amount of words recalled was close to identical, there was a  change in the serial position curve. In this case, early items have the highest probability of recall (not last), last items second highest (not first), and middle items least. This is due to the fact that when having to remember the words in order, long term stores would be most accurate as those words were most repeated in order. The above findings are important since they gave cognitive researchers an insight into memory processes, and support the multi-store model theory.They show that we remember the beginning, because it is stored in long-term stores, and end, when the short-term storage is not interrupted, but least frequently middle words, as hypothesized by the serial position curve and the primacy and recency effects. This experiment is a  replication of Deese (1957). It uses the distinction of free recall and serial anticipation, to affect the serial position curve and focus on LTS primarily. Aim: investigate effect of the recall of words in free recall, and recall by serial anticipation, and the effect it has on LTS and STS in relation to the serial position curve.Experimental hypothesis (H1): Participants in free recall condition will show a  classic position curve with the recency effect taking plac e almost equally to the primacy effect, and then when compared to participants in the serial anticipation condition where the primacy effect will be dominant. (Free recall: words recalled in any order. Serial recall: words recalled in order they were presented. ) Null hypothesis (H0): There will be no significant difference between recall of words when compared in free recall and serial anticipation situations, or any difference will be due to chance. Method Design:Independent measures design was chosen to eliminate order effect, and to prevent boredom, tiredness, or improvement of skills with performance. Independent variable was used in the same sense, but with slight variation in the form of recall. If the same participants were used, they would know what to learn in the first part, and that would affect the second part of the experiment. One possible disadvantage of this design is that there may be participant variability. For example, participants may vary in memory ability, so the differences between groups may be due to this and not simply to the manipulation of the IV.To avoid participant variability, participants were given two practice lists to memorize, and the mean in these two lists was within two standard deviations, suggesting that the participants had similar memory capacity. Another disadvantage would be participant sabotaging the study, or becoming distracted. This was prevented by eliminating empty lists submitted by participants from results, hanging a sign so that people would not enter the testing classroom, and asking anyone distractive to leave. Ethical considerations were followed, as each participant was briefed before the experiment, and debriefed after it.It was clear that at any time participants had the right to withdraw from the experiment and their anonymity would be protected. Participants were not harmed physically or psychologically, and all signed informed consent form. Independent variable: Whether free recall or serial ord er recall was instructed. Participants were asked, and those who accepted met in the classroom. The participants were required to have specific English abilities because the experiment was conducted in English. In total, for the experiment we had 11 boys and 25 girls (N=36). Materials: * Consent forms * Standardized briefing and debriefing instructions * 8 lists of 20 different words * Answer sheets * Stopwatch Procedure: Before experiments began, 8 different lists of 20 words were randomly created from a list of 1,000 common English language words.First group of participants (N=18), brought to a quiet classroom, each seated at a desk. Standardized briefing was read out loud, and informed consent was given. Answer sheets were placed face-down on each desk. 1. Subjects were required to recall two practice lists, given with standardized instructions. They were instructed free recall. Each list was read by experimenter at the rate of one word per two seconds, without emphasis, and recall was required immediately after the reading. 2. Participants were divided into control and experimental groups randomly. One group was tested at a time. . Control group was given 3 lists with the same instructions as those for practice lists. After finishing the lists, groups switched locations. 4. Experimental group had the following sequence of instructions: * First list: instructions were same as for practice list. (Free recall is called on for both before reading of the list and after. ) * Second list: instructions before the list were for free recall, and instructions for recall in serial-order were instructed after hearin g. * Third list: instructions were to recall in serial-order were given before and after reading list. . All lists were collected, and both groups were read standardized debriefing together. Second group of participants (N=18) was tested, and same procedure was followed. Results Descriptive: The experiment collected interval ratio data. Therefore, mean and standard deviation were chosen as descriptive statistics. As this study has a focus on the amount of words recalled in different stages of the list, words were classified under four headings: â€Å"Beginning† (words 1-6), â€Å"Middle† (words 7-14), and â€Å"End† (words 15-20), along with â€Å"Total† as summary, for comparison and analysis.From Table 1. it can be deduced that when free recall was instructed and used, participants received similar results over-all ( average of 8. 25 and 8. 75 words), although the results were not dispersed close to the mean. With standard deviations (SD) being differin g and high (3. 31 and 5. 42), this suggests primacy and recency effect. From Table 2. it can be deduced that when participants were expecting to perform free recall, but were instructed serial recall, the performance over-all significantly dropped (averages of 7. 65 compared to 3. 95).Furthermore more words were remembered in the situation of serial recall in beginning, since they were stored in LTS, and therefore their position could be better recalled, suggesting the primacy effect (7. 17 compared to 3. 67). From measures on table 3. it can be deduced that primacy effect is dominant in serial recall, as the mean of words in beginning (9. 00), dropped down in the end words (4. 38). T-test was chosen because it is more powerful, and shows whether they have significant differences. Advantages are that it works well with two means—its good for ratio data, such as in this experiment. Disadvantage is that results are assumed to come from a  normally distributed population.This test is good to use when the population mean and standard deviation are unknown, and 2 separate groups are being compared, that is why it was chosen over other tests. A3 and B3 lists (control free recall versus serial recall), had P-value of . 0023, meaning difference is statistically significant. The difference between free recall and serial recall list had a  value lower than the significance chosen of P= 0. 05, we rejected the null hypothesis and accepted the experimental hypothesis. Graph 1. This graph maps out all the 6 lists (3 control and 3 experimental), in order to visually represent the primacy and recency effects of each list. DiscussionThis experiment observed relationship between frequency of recall per item and order of emission in immediate recall. Previous research has shown that as sequence is introduced into material to be recalled by free recall, serial position curve changes from free recall of disconnected items to recall by serial anticipation. This suggests that its possible to alter the form of serial position curve by method of recall. For the experimental lists, Deese (1957) had averages of 3. 69 in second list, and 4. 33 in third, similar to this experiment, performance in first list was highest, as it was in free recall.Performance in second list was worst, as it was unexpected serial recall. In third list serial recall was expected, hence it was higher than second list, but lower than first, as free recall is more efficient than serial, confirmed by previous research. In this experiment when participants recalled lists using free recall, similar amount of words was recalled (8. 25 and 8. 75), implying the two groups are comparable. Second experimental list showed significantly decreased performance (7. 65 and 3. 95), the P-value being 0. 0021 with 5% significance.This could be due to unexpected instruction of serial recall. Third experimental list suggests loss in total number of items recalled with anticipated serial order, compared to free recall (9. 10 and 4. 55). However, primacy effec t is dominant to recency effect (9. 00 to 4. 48), with P-value 0. 0439, suggesting change of position curve from that characteristic of free recall to that of serial anticipation. It seems reasonable to conclude that form of serial position curve in free recall is dependent on order of emission of items in recall.If recall is completely unstructured (free recall), items are recalled in order of strength, and last items, on average, are recalled first, as suggested Murdock 1962. This experiment further supports that if serial recall is induced, items are recalled in order and the first items are most frequently recalled, supporting the experimental hypothesis. The results of this study support the findings of Deese 1957, confirming correlation between frequency of recall per item, list position and position in recall found in previous experiments.Results are consistent with findings of Deese as it can be noted that the primacy effect is dominant in the serial recall compared to the f ree-recall conditions. It also supports the multi-store memory model of Atkinson & Schiffrin because it can be seen that the memory is composed of long-term and short-term stores, due to a significant difference between the amount of words recalled from the beginning, middle, and end of the list. One limitation is that most participants were IB-diploma students so they were probably trained in remembering terms.Additionally, generalization could be a problem because of the participant’s age range of 16-19 years compared to the original experiment with the age range of 18-54 years. The similar average in free recall lists of both conditions (8. 25 and 8. 75) indicates that participants performed relatively similar. This may be because students were similar in age and were all IB students. An improvement in a future experiment is to use a larger age range such as Deese 1957. Also the fact that most participants were not native in English language could affect results.Furthermor e although independent measure was chosen, participants did not have same lists, which might have had an effect on the participants’ ability to memorize the words. It can be noted that means of the free-recall conditions are differed, which indicates that participants remembered some lists better than the others. A modification could be that the control and experimental group would get the same word lists in order to make the comparison more reliable. Although all participants were not tested at same time, all procedures were followed for both groups, so that they would have comparable results.Lastly, artificiality is a problem because of the experimental method. However, seeing as the experiment was conducted in a classroom, this can be considered a natural environment. Researchers are discussing to what extent results on memory like these can be relied on. One modification is to use words the sample is familiar with such as party, and cell-phone, instead of horse and person . Nonetheless, replications of the study by Deese (1957) have demonstrated the clear effect of using concrete words on recall, and thus we can rely on these results.In conclusion, the results attained in this experiment are consistent with cognitive theories about memory processes such as MSM, and the primacy and recency effects. Therefore this experiment concluded that words using free recall are better recalled than of serial recall. This is probably due to us having access to both long-term and short term memory. In serial order, one mainly knows the position of words stored in long-term memory. However, the researchers did not study whether people would perform better if they could not easily associate with the words, nor strategies used in memorization.This is a possible topic for further research. A1 list B1 list In this comparison, we can notice that both the primacy and recency effects are present. These two groups were the same in the fact that both were instructed free recall, and only difference between them was the participants and the words they had to memorize. As we can notice, the lines are not exactly the same, as natural variations occur, but according to the Student T-Test these two groups are not statistically different, so the difference is by ch ance.However, we still see the fall in number of words recalled in the middle ( words 6-14), which had on average 2 words recalled (out of 8), while the first had around 5 (out of 6) , and the last around 4 (out of 6). A2 list B2 list A2 list is the control for B2, where in the A2 free recall was instructed, while the B2 had implied free recall before the list was read, and then instructed serial recall. This list (B2), had a predicted drop in frequency of words memorized, as the participants did not expect to memorize in order, so over-all panic lead to overall performance loss.As we can see, the total average recall in A2 list of 8 words, dropped down to 3 in the B2 list. However, although of the poor preset, we can see that the primacy effect is starting to be much stronger (average of 7 words compared to 4), whereas in the control. A3 list B3 list These two graphs differ in the fact that in the A3 list, free recall was instructed, whereas in the B3 list serial recall was instruc ted. Accident essay

It was my 13th birthday. I decided to celebrate my birthday at the Cage, a soccer pitch, with my new friends, including my best friend, Stung Grunts. His name sounds like, â€Å"strong†, which is indeed true. Once, he was able to move this big table by himself to the other end! Isn’t it amazing? The people in the soccer pitch that I had rented were filled with emotions. We knew that there are exciting hours waiting for us. However, I had different plans. Every alternate day in my school whenever my friends, including Strung Grunts, and I went to the school field to play soccer, my friends would always praise Strung Grunts saying, â€Å"Hey!Strung! You are the best soccer player! You rock! † I curled my upper lip to keep myself from speaking. My mind was whirling with thoughts that only made me assume the worst. The feeling of jealousy was slowly growing in me; filling my blood, making my eyes go dark, and my mouth become a straight line. I knew that this was the time when I could do something to Strung Grunts and make sure that he does not play soccer for the rest of his life. I decided to hurt him indirectly. However, a million of thoughts ran through my mind at that point of time. Should I really cause him pain? Isn’t he my best friend? Is it wrong?Or is it right? Shouldn’t I train myself to become a better soccer player than him? I was in a dilemma. However, my jealousy got the better of me. Rather than thinking whether my act is right or wrong, I spent the time thinking what I shall do to him. Suddenly, an idea struck my mind. There were still 10 minutes left before we planned to start playing a game of soccer. Everybody went to the washroom to get a shower before playing except me. Strung Grunts left his boots outside the washroom before entering. Within a flash, I quickly went near the washroom, tied the laces of both the shoes together and fled from the washroom. minutes passed. Everyone came out of the washroom. It was very wet and slippery outside the washroom. My heart was thumping and pounding hard. A chill ran down my spine. Strung Grunts went on to put on his shoes without realising what had happened. When he took his first step itself, he slipped and fell down with a â€Å"thud†. Three, two, one†¦ Ahhhhhhhhhh!!! , Strung Grunts shouted out loud as our ears became almost deaf. A flood of tears gushed down his ashen pale cheeks staining the floor. He tried moving both his legs but he was not able to do so. All of us came to him frantically, including me, and gathered around him.We quickly informed this news to his mother as soon as possible. Within a flash, his mother came down to the pitch, horrified and bloodcurdling. I was informed that he fractured each of his legs. Moreover, the doctor advised him not to engage in any activity that requires the use of his legs for the next six months. Till now, everyone thinks that the slippery floor was the main cause of his accident. Howeve r, only I knew the truth. The scar which I have on my heart is invisible to anyone but more painful than anything I have ever felt. I would like to tell him the truth but I think it is not the right time yet, what about you?

Storey’s Three Comopnent Model

Moving on to the second part of the question looking at Storey’s , â€Å"Three Component Model† and how useful it is in identifying the key characteristics of successful growth businesses. Most of the small businesses do not grow beyond their classification as a micro firm, very few of the small firms rise to become a medium-size enterprise, and even fewer rise to become large companies in the future. Storey (1994) has identified three key components in the analysis of the growth of the small firms, they are influenced by the characteristics of the entrepreneur, the characteristics of the organization; and the types of strategy associated. Various different characteristics of each component can lead to a different type of growth within the SME. The characteristics of the entrepreneur are widely accepted as the vital ingredient that influences growth. For example, the personal goals of an entrepreneur are likely to influence why a business was started in the first place, as well as the strength of the firm’s growth orientation once it was established. Storey’s places less emphasis on personality per se and more on the personal characteristics which influence access to resources. These include * Motivation: This is likely to be the most indispensable and essential action or a commitment by the entrepreneur which makes a considerable difference in the growth of the enterprise. * Previous management experience: Earlier knowhow of organizing people and processes is important in maintaining growth. * Demographics of the entrepreneur: This is essentially with regard to the personality traits of the entrepreneur viz. Age and Education. These two traits can influence the growth of the firm, Entrepreneurs with higher educational qualifications are more likely to find high-tech and knowledge-based firms which in turn can be linked with higher growth rate of the firm. * Team management over individual management: Access to a wide range of resources, skills, experiences, advice and other resources is important to growth. A group of entrepreneurs are more liable to have the attributes wanted than just one person. Alongside these characteristics are more personal ones. Owners have a need to be independent and want to be their own managers. They believe that they can control and change the environment within which they work, to their benefit. They are often high achievers and are looking for recognition of their success. † (Burns, 2001). The characteristics of the enterprise also have an influence on its growth prospects: Ownership and Legal form: A limited company is more likely to grow than a sole trader or partner ship. Limited companies offer greater goodwill thereby attracting more customers and resources that it needs to accelerate its growth. It is also possible that as the companies develop they acquire a limited liability status so that the legal form is a result of growth. Firms Age: Younger firms tend to grow more and faster than the existing old firms, which reflects the need of the younger firm to attain a significant level of ‘critical mass’ to survive in the marketplace. Firms Size: Small firms find it very hard to grow to level of the bigger firms, as they lack the resources, skills and competitive edge. One of the main reasons being the entrepreneurs with a micro-firm do not wish to grow because of the reasons stated above. â€Å"Management devolution is essential for growth as it becomes impossible for the entrepreneur to manage on their own. Those firms that recruit experienced managers from larger firms are likely to be more successful. † (Storey, 1994). Storey’s review of area where management strategy may influence the growth of small firms includes: Introduction of new products: Companies cannot rely on a smaller product or service range for growth. They continuous innovation in the form of new products and services is a key to growth. This also includes modification of the existing products. Sharing of Equity: Willingness to share equity with external individuals or organizations was identified in small firms that actually achieved high rates of growth. Market position: Adopting defined niche markets is a key ingredient for the growth of the company
